01

Your first class

Ask to see the basic step with the song before adding one arm or body accent. Repeat it in different places in the music and choose one that fits clearly. The detail then rests on a rhythm you understand.

Find out whether the whole class works solo or tries movement with partners. In partner dance, a hand may share direction, so a styling detail needs clear timing and agreement from both people. Ask how the class teaches that choice.

02

What this class label means

This studio label names a class in individual movement. Its musical history belongs to the chosen dance, such as salsa or bachata. If the teacher combines forms, ask which step comes from each tradition.

Culture and community

Styling can be quiet: a look, a short hand path or a pause before a turn. At a social, watch dancers adapt to a partner and nearby couples. A good choice leaves room for the music and another person's reply.

If the class uses bachata, begin with its Dominican music and dance tradition. If it uses salsa, the Smithsonian account opens another musical path. A named rhythm helps you choose a detail that fits the phrase.

03

Movement to notice

Styling for which dance?

Footwork and rhythm show whether an expressive arm belongs to salsa, bachata or another taught form.

Augustė's Bachata Lady Styling example

Augustė's solo bachata shows one Lady Styling approach through music and arm lines.

04

Listen to the music

The chosen dance sets the music. Bachata guitar and salsa percussion ask for different pauses and footwork.

Choosing a class

Questions to ask

  • How do you show that arm movement fits the foot rhythm of the chosen dance?
  • Does this class use salsa, bachata or another dance and its music?
  • Where can students practise safely after class and learn more about this style's music and community?

No account needed. Marks stay for up to 3 months.

How do marks work?

One mark per studio, for up to 10 studios every 24 hours. Each card keeps the 50 newest marks; a new one replaces the oldest. Each mark lasts up to 90 days. You can change yours every 10 seconds or remove it at any time. Changing it does not extend its expiry.

The most common reaction sets the color of the card's edge. These are visitor marks, not a studio rating.
