Gymnastics

A gymnastics class may focus on artistic, rhythmic or another discipline. Before booking, ask which discipline it teaches, the age and level of the group, and how tasks progress.

01

Your first class

Ask the coach to explain the warm-up, main task and rest periods. On day one, learn how to support your weight and use an easier version of the exercise. If the group uses mats or other equipment, learn its rules before trying a movement.

Find out whether the group serves dancer mobility, general movement or a named gymnastics discipline. The goal changes the exercises. Ask how the coach assesses your starting level and when they introduce a harder task.

02

What this class label means

The Olympic gymnastics guide distinguishes artistic, rhythmic and trampoline disciplines. A studio class may teach one of these or preparatory movement; ask the teacher for its exact programme.

Culture and community

Watch how a coach explains levels of one movement. People in the same group may have different aims: one builds coordination, another prepares for a performance. A clear exercise goal helps each person choose a suitable version.

If the class draws on rhythmic gymnastics, watch how movement meets music and apparatus. The Olympic guide names hoop, ball, clubs and ribbon in that discipline. Ask the teacher about the beginner programme.

03

Movement to notice

Progression before trick

Support and landing technique must be safe before a bridge, handstand or another skill.

04

Listen to the music

A gymnastics class may work without music. Landing quality and safe pacing matter more than a soundtrack.

05

Choosing a class

Questions to ask

  • How do you teach supports and landing before a harder skill?
  • Does this group teach dance gymnastics or sport gymnastics, and is music used?
  • How do you adapt the load for different mobility or past injuries, and when should a movement stop?

Leave your mark

No account needed. Marks stay for up to 3 months.

How do marks work?

One mark per studio, for up to 10 studios every 24 hours. Each card keeps the 50 newest marks; a new one replaces the oldest. Each mark lasts up to 90 days. You can change yours every 10 seconds or remove it at any time. Changing it does not extend its expiry.

The most common reaction sets the color of the card's edge. These are visitor marks, not a studio rating.
