Freestyle

In a Freestyle class, you choose movement as you hear the music. A teacher can give a clear task about rhythm, space or one body part to help you begin improvising.

01

Your first class

Begin with a step you already know. Repeat it, then change direction or pause when the song brings in a new sound. A teacher can offer one concrete choice if the group stops and needs a starting point.

Ask whether the class draws on hip-hop, house, jazz or another form. Each brings its own movement principles. Take a short solo turn when you want to; improvisation can also happen through small choices within the group.

02

What this class label means

Freestyle describes a way of dancing found across many traditions. A hip-hop cypher, house club and jazz jam each have distinct musical and community histories. The class should name the tradition behind the steps it teaches.

Culture and community

When dancing with others, watch how people invite someone into a circle and leave room for a reply. One dancer may repeat a rhythm; another changes its direction. That exchange helps you hear the track and choose a movement for the shared moment.

The Smithsonian hip-hop collection gives one community context for improvisation. NDEO’s dance-education account distinguishes improvisation from set choreography. Ask which dance scene informs your freestyle class.

Movement to notice

One choice

Answer one drum accent or pause, then leave room for another choice.

04

Listen to the music

Choose one drum accent, phrase or silence and answer it. Another song may invite a different vocabulary.

05

Choosing a class

Questions to ask

  • How do you give a beginner a few movement choices to answer the music?
  • Will we improvise alone, in a cypher or in a battle, and what music will play?
  • Where can students practise safely after class and learn more about this style's music and community?

Choreography fixes a sequence in advance and lets it be polished. Freestyle makes decisions now, turning mistakes, pauses, and musical surprises into material.

A small sign. A lot of love.

Leave your mark

No account needed. Marks stay for up to 3 months.

How do marks work?

One mark per studio, for up to 10 studios every 24 hours. Each card keeps the 50 newest marks; a new one replaces the oldest. Each mark lasts up to 90 days. You can change yours every 10 seconds or remove it at any time. Changing it does not extend its expiry.

The most common reaction sets the color of the card's edge. These are visitor marks, not a studio rating.
