01

What makes this dance interesting

Show Dance is a stage format carried by studios, contests and theatre projects. Each work’s movement roots depend on the dances its makers choose.

The International Dance Organization's 2026 rules show one competition route for stage dance. A studio Show Dance class may instead prepare a school event or theatre piece. The performance format belongs to the specific work.

Culture and community

In the IDO Show Dance description, a performance carries a clear theme or story through movement. In class, you can explore how music, formation and movement quality help tell it.

The song and chosen dance movements help a group build a stage story. Each dancer adds timing and focus. For a children's group, the rehearsal, costume and performance plan affects family time and cost, so check it before booking.

Movement to notice

Listen to the music

In a stage work, music shapes the opening, climax and ending. Hear a phrase build, pause or change mood, and watch how the choreography answers those changes.

04

How to begin

Expect a clear stage task: theme, musical phrase, line, and place in the group. A good teacher builds a show in layers, so beginners can build toward the finale.

Work on one specific point per attempt, such as an angle or partner spacing.

Begin with one stage phrase: entrance, clear accent and exit. Notice where the other dancers stand and what an audience would see. The teacher can separate tasks for music, space and expression so you can work on one choice at a time.

Choreography

Choreography may be a learning process or studio routine. Show Dance aims at a finished stage result with drama, projection, and visual choices.

06

What to consider

  • Check whether the group welcomes beginners and which dances its choreography combines.
  • If the group prepares a performance, check its date, rehearsal schedule and costume costs before joining.
  • During a trial, notice whether the routine is taught in sections, the teacher explains spacing and learners receive help.

Leave your mark

No account needed. Marks stay for up to 3 months.

How do marks work?

One mark per studio, for up to 10 studios every 24 hours. Each card keeps the 50 newest marks; a new one replaces the oldest. Each mark lasts up to 90 days. You can change yours every 10 seconds or remove it at any time. Changing it does not extend its expiry.

The most common reaction sets the color of the card's edge. These are visitor marks, not a studio rating.
