In a choreography class, you learn a movement sequence made for a piece of music. The song, technique and performance goal depend on the group.
01
Hear the part of the song used for the routine first. The teacher can show the foot path, then add arms, gaze and travel. Repeat one short phrase slowly before dancing the whole sequence with the group.
Ask which technique the class uses and whether it ends with a performance or filming. A group may prepare a stage piece, learn a pop-video routine or make movement for its own sake. The goal shapes how much time goes to performance and improvisation.
02
Choreography is a way of making dance across many forms. A particular routine has the histories of its music, movements and creator. Ask the teacher to name the dance form and choreographer when learning an existing piece.
The same routine can feel different on stage and in a small studio circle. Watch how dancers leave room for one another and where a musical accent changes the formation. Shared timing lets each person add a small personal detail.
Repeat one step three ways: change its direction, speed and the space between dancers. NDEO’s choreography course places such choices in a dance-making process. Ask the maker to name the music and movement source.
03
Break a phrase into weight, direction and accent, then ask why the choreographer joined them.

A choreographer chooses accents and quiet spaces. Ask why the phrase begins at that point.
